The pragmatic consensus of the authorities and the opposition on the issue of European integration allows Ukraine to choose the right turn on the geopolitical crossroads. Our country is returning to the European family of peoples – perhaps not as fast as they want it in Europe, but Ukraine makes a conscious choice.
Unfortunately, it did not occur to Ukrainian parliamentarians to change their working schedule for the autumn. It would have been useful for them to ad hoc rewrite the schedule of the plenary sessions at the Verkhovna Rada in order to adopt all the laws needed for the EU Association Agreement signature with the shortest possible delay. But it did not happen; therefore the European integration intrigue will carry on for a while. Nevertheless, the adoption of the major part of the obligations from “Fule’s list” at the beginning of September is a good sign reassuring of a successful completion of the cause.
However, there is a threat of political blackmail sometimes utilized at the Ukrainian parliament. Unfortunately, people’s deputies lost a lot of time in the conditions of the parliament tribune being blocked. The actual balance of power between the authorities and the opposition as regards the number of deputies as well as the presence of heavyweight boxing champion Vitali Klitschko among the parliamentarians minimize the possibility of forceful actions at the Verkhovna Rada. The parliamentarians will have to realize the necessity of European integration, which is often more difficult than hand-to-hand fighting. The leaders of the opposition factions will basically have to cease their presidential campaigns, de facto in progress, in order to vote along with the representatives of the Party of Regions.
The Russian factor also should not be disregarded. It only seems at first sight that Moscow acts in the straightforward manner, exerting economic pressure on Ukraine and other member countries of the “Eastern Partnership”. I believe that an unusually tough resolution of the European Parliament in relation to the Kremlin would make its master get even more active. Secret mechanisms of the influence on EU politicians and also in the post-Soviet area will be launched to torpedo the successful holding of the “Eastern Partnership” Summit. I remind that the Russian elite interpret the closer relations between Ukraine and the European Union as their own defeat.
Vladimir Putin is not used to giving up and the Russian propaganda machinery greatly affects Ukraine and other CIS countries as well. But Russians are not acting farsightedly making bets on the marginal people and having illusions. Russia has never tried to build up a fair cooperation not only with Ukraine but also with other countries which became the members of the Customs Union. This tactic blunder will lead to Russia’s strategic defeat and the decrease in its influence in the post-Soviet area.
Today it must be admitted that the interests of the Ukrainian authorities and the opposition in the field of European integration coincided due to the circumstances. But it is not a reason to discard the opportunity to modernize Ukraine more. All in all, the political lines of Viktor Yanukovych and his team, on the one hand, and his opponents, on the other hand, resemble the railway tracks along which the train of Ukraine is moving towards the European Union. And the more common interests capable of improving lives of our compatriots, serve as the crossties of this main road, the fewer chances there will be to turn the train into the geopolitical dead-end siding.
